What is list sponsorship?

List sponsorship is paying for the placement of a header or footer on a particular list that helps to cover the cost of list maintenance.  Think of list sponsorship as "brought to you by..."

List sponsorship allows you text-based ads to be placed either as a header or footer (we decide based on the list and size of the ad you want to run) on a specific discussion list.  Every time a member posts to the list your ad will appear in the e-mail posted, along with the IOH notation that you are sponsoring the cost of running the support list.  Only one sponsor at a time is permitted on a list so you won't be competing with anyone else.  Whether there are 50 members on a list or 1,000, the price is the same.  We don't disclose information about our list members and you do not have to belong to a list to advertise on it.

Your ad will be seen by all the list members every time a message is posted to the list.  Some lists are more active than others but sponsorship is a great way to ensure your ad is being seen and to demonstrate that you cared enough about diabetes to sponsor a list's activities.

Because of the list-serve program, we are unable to use .html codes, hyperlinks, or images.  Only text will work but you can include the text version of hyperlinks.

Choosing a list(s) to sponsor

You can choose to sponsor any of our lists as long as another sponsor is not currently advertising on that list.  It helps to know what each list is about because some lists may be more suited to a particular product or service.  Visit our Online Discussion Groups page to see what lists we offer, and to read a brief description about each list.

You do not have to promote diabetes-related products or services but you if you are a member of the diabetes business community (you, your spouse, or your child has diabetes) you might want to offer that information.

Length of sponsorship

Lists can only be sponsored for one month at a time but you can continue to sponsor a list for as long as you wish in one-month increments.

Headers and footers

The size of header (top of page) and footer (bottom of page) ads are determined by you.  However, typically, these types of ads work better when they are not excessively long.  Headers in particular, should be fairly brief, because they are the first thing seen on the e-mail document when viewed.  It is our experience that if headers are long, they visually interfere with the reader's focus and  tend to be ignored or worse -- regarded as "annoying."

Footers are a great place to put more detailed information.  They have less "immediate visual impact" because they go after the end of the email, but long footers are usually not considered "offensive" as a long header would and are more likely to be completely read.

If your ad is too long, or otherwise not drafted for what we know works best with headers and footers, we will offer recommendations as to how you can improve your chances of your ad being read.  We reserve the right to reject any ads that do not meet our standards.  Please read "Advertising Rules" for more information.

Our list server uses a "default" font (looks like New Roman Times) and html codes will not work with Mailman lists (our webmail and support list host).

The freebie option

Due to the administrative work involved in dealing with headers and footers on lists (it is time consuming) we do not offer free list sponsorhsip.  But we are willing to help nonprofit organizations get the word out when they are actively fundraising.

Please read our Rules for Advertising  BEFORE you submit an ad to us.

The at-cost option

List sponsorship allows you text-based ads as a header or footer (we decide) on a specific discussion list.  Every time a member posts to the list your ad will appear along with the IOH notation that you are sponsoring the cost of running the support list (and a thank you).  Only one sponsor at a time is permitted on a list so you won't be competing with anyone else.  If there are 100 members on a list, your ad will be seen by all 100 members every time a message is posted to the list.  Some lists are more active than others but sponsorship is a great way to ensure your ad is being seen and that you care.

Because of the list-serve program, we are unable to use .html codes, hyperlinks, or images.  Only text will work but you can include the text version of hyperlinks.

If you wish to have graphics, large, or banner ads, sorry, we need to charge you something or we could end up with advertisers driving up our costs to run our site.  We don't want that because we give half of all our site proceeds to diabetes causes that directly benefit persons in need.

Those who qualify for at-cost advertising include:

  • Nonprofit organizations that benefit, or further the causes of, diabetes, or disorders associated with diabetes.  Note: Simply having a web address ending in .org does not a nonprofit make.

  • Business owners or service providers that have diabetes, or a child with diabetes.  Many parents open home-based business to be able to stay at home in order to provide care and support for their child with diabetes.  Or, they may start a second-income businesses to help cover increased medical and care costs. These are folks we'd really like to help.

  • Pediatric endocrinologists that (based on individual patient eligibility) put children under the age of 12 on insulin pumps.

  • Diabetes and associated disorders grass-roots and local support groups.

  • Companies that donate any portion of sales proceeds back to Islets of Hope, IPump.org, the JDRF, or Children With Diabetes (yes, we will check).

Please read our Rules for Advertising BEFORE you submit an ad to us.

How do I demonstrate that I really am a business owner living with diabetes?

We are big on trust and our paid advertising rates are pretty cheap so hopefully, people won't lie to place free ads.  If you have a website or other advertisement that currently states how diabetes has affected your life, we will give you the benefit of the doubt too.  We do ask, that when you write to us, you tell us who you are, who has diabetes (yourself, spouse, or child), when they were diagnosed and permit us to use a first name, and general location, so that we can to add that information to your ad, identifying you as an Islets of Hope Member.

For example, we might embellish your ad, or event "brag" we are helping your business to grow:

Chordville USA
Musical Instruments at prices that will have you singing all the way home.

Chordville USA is owned by the proud parents of:
Jared, type 1, age 3

Please read our Rules for Advertising BEFORE you submit an ad to us.

List sponsorship rates

We vary our payment program depending upon our needs and interest in helping nonprofit companies with fundraising campaigns.  The three payment programs we rotate are:

  • Have you use a credit card to simply pay for the ad,
  • Ask that you make a donation to a charitable cause (through our site),
  • Donate directly to our web hosting company.

Whatever method we request payment the dollar amount will remain the same.

How to submit your ad

Important Notice:  IOH cannot offer refunds for ads.  Once you make your donation, it is final.  For this reason, we request that you contact us with an example of your ad prior to making payment.  If, for any reason, there is a problem with placing your ad (i.e. inappropriate content for our site) you won't be out of a buck.

Make your payment or donation.  We automatically receive a copy of your donation receipt (amount and e-mail address only).

Send us your ad for placement, along with information about who in your life has diabetes.

BEFORE sending us files with attachments you must contact us to learn how to do this.  Otherwise, any e-mails we receive with attachments from you will be ignored as Spam with possible virus infection and discarded without being read.

Ads will be placed on a test link site within five (5) business days.  You will be sent the test link to your ad so that you can look it over (that way, if we make a mistake, we won't make your company look bad).  You have 30 days to report any typos or problems with the ad (we will fix our mistakes for free the same day that you report them to us), or approve it for final posting to the site. If we don't hear from you within 30 days your ad will not be placed (sorry, no refunds).
