10 Keys to Helping Your Child with Diabetes  Tim Wysocki   The Ten Keys to Helping Your Child With Diabetes
This second edition explores the wide range of physical, emotional, and psychological issues that affect diabetic children and helps parents deal with them. New to this edition are topics such as children living with type 2 diabetes and the special needs of children using an insulin pump.  Wysocki, Ph.D. is the chief of the division of psychology and psychiatry at Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

Important disclaimer:  The following are states listing(s) for schools, school districts, and day care institutions that have received positive rating from parents of children with diabetes.  Islets of Hope does not endorse or recommend any school, it simply relays information as reported to us by other who claim to have had a positive experience in their school.

If you are considering enrolling your child into a school on this list, we suggest that you contact the school yourself. Each family's experience is unique and may not be a fair representation of any school.

A mother and an aunt of a child with diabetes co-writes:

"Due largely to the efforts of our school nurse, Ms. Cindy Woods, who has taken it upon herself to advocate for personally training more than eight First Responders to administer Glucagon in an emergency, as well as intercede with the principal, Ms. Mimi Iannuzzi, for blood glucose testing by the student in the classroom or anywhere on site in an emergent situation, I believe Columbus Elementary is one of the safest schools for Type 1 diabetic children in the country.   Cindy has also spoken to the bus company to provide training.  In the past, the bus company did not wish their drivers trained in “medical use of juice or cake frosting” to treat lows, but Cindy has managed to change that.  (Note:  New York state laws requires training of bus drivers to respond to an emergency diabetic situation.)

Even before these new changes, Columbus Elementary has always had a full time nurse and Type 1 children have received excellent care while at school.  The children have their glucose tested before and after gym, before lunch where lunch time boluses are supervised by the Nurse, and before dismissal and being placed on the school bus.  The nurse is in constant contact with the parents throughout the school day if the parents so desire.  Academic accommodations, such as blood sugar testing before exams, exams rescheduled when blood sugar is too high or low, a set of extra text books if a child is absent so they can catch up at home, email communication between parent and teacher daily during absences have been granted.  Any request asked for under our 504 Plan has been granted.  If any revisions to the 504 Plan need to be made at any time, a prompt meeting is convened by Dr. Catherine Corbin, school psychologist, so that amendments to the 504 Plan can be put in place immediately.

Ms. Iannuzzi, the principal, has been extremely proactive in hiring R.N.'s with appropriate qualifications and training in treating Type 1 diabetes, and is extremely careful regarding who she will allow to substitute for the permanent R.N.'s in their absence.  All substitutes are screened and trained beforehand.  In addition to Cindy Woods, there is a part time nurse, Dawn McCarrick, who is equally qualified.  Substitute nurses are only called in if Dawn and Cindy are both absent.  Because of the supervision and cooperation of the above-mentioned personnel, [children] can attend school without any worry on our part whatsoever."
