10 Keys to Helping Your Child with Diabetes  Tim Wysocki   The Ten Keys to Helping Your Child With Diabetes
This second edition explores the wide range of physical, emotional, and psychological issues that affect diabetic children and helps parents deal with them. New to this edition are topics such as children living with type 2 diabetes and the special needs of children using an insulin pump.  Wysocki, Ph.D. is the chief of the division of psychology and psychiatry at Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and has been in practice for more than 20 years.

Important disclaimer:  The following are states listing(s) for schools, school districts, and day care institutions that have received positive rating from parents of children with diabetes.  Islets of Hope does not endorse or recommend any school, it simply relays information as reported to us by other who claim to have had a positive experience in their school.

If you are considering enrolling your child into a school on this list, we suggest that you contact the school yourself. Each family's experience is unique and may not be a fair representation of any school.

San Bernardino County

Pepper Tree Elementary School:  Address:  1045 West 18th St., Upland, CA  91784.  Phone:  (909) 949-9635.  District:  Upland Unified.  Principal:  Marilyn Ward.

Although many schools in California have refused to provide reasonable care and accommodations to children with diabetes Pepper Tree Elementary School has not followed this pattern.  Their dedicated health clinic technician is willing and able to assist children at Pepper Tree with all aspects of their diabetes care.  The school has even made accomodations for services dogs in training and embraces children with medical and other special needs.  The health tech is even currently learning to count carbs to have a better understanding about children in her care.  She has shown a willingness to work with individual families to make sure children are safe at school and is always quick with a warm smile.

Recently, a class-action lawsuit against the California Department of Education was decided.  The suit alleged illegal and discriminatory practices state-wide against children with diabetes.  A separate complaint was also filed against the Upland Unified School District.  The suit was decided in favor of student rights for diabetic children.  Laws were passed that declared that school districts must provide care for children with diabetes.  Read more about this decision.

Unfortunately, the California Board of Nurses filed a counter suit in October of 2007 stating that only a registered nurse administer insulin and has encourage school districts to ignore the new state laws and have even refused to train other school staff in diabetes care.  But even with the lack of support from the nurses board Pepper Tree remains committed to the best interests of helping children with diabetes at school.  A bug thumbs up to principal Ward and her caring staff!
