If you are considering enrolling your child into a school on this list, we suggest that you contact the school yourself.  Each family's experience is unique and may not be a fair representation of any school.

Schools Parents Gave an "F"  to for Substandard Diabetic Student Care
As Reported by Other Parents of Children With Diabetes

To date, only complaints about California schools have been sent to us.   Please consider letting us know about your school if you are having trouble.  When parents work together -- laws can change!  We will not give out identifying information!

California - San Bernardino County

San Bernardino County:  School district policies regarding the treatment of diabetic students are not in compliance with either federal or state laws.  Schools in  SB County specifically mentioned by parents as providing substandard care include:  Valencia Elementary School (Upland) and Upland High School.   Both schools do accept diabetic students, however, due to the constraints set forth by county "unwritten" policy illegal and even dangerous practices for diabetes care of students is an ongoing problem in this county.  (Example: students being automatically treated for low before given sugar checks, no diabetes supplies including glucose are permitted in classrooms, no nurses onsite and health techs cannot make diabetes care decisions without prior consent of the district nurse.  Teachers and administrative staff are not routinely trained in diabetes  awareness or care and are prohibited from providing care.  For diabetes emergencies, health technicians are directed to call 911.)

UPDATE:  08/08/2007.  In October of 2006, a complaint was filed against the Upland Unified School District (UUSD).  The California Department of Education responded quickly to require substantial changes in the UUSD including in-classroom glucose testing, issuance of 504 Plans for students with diabetes, as well as assistance from trained staff to help with insulin administration, blood sugar checks, and carbohydrate calculation.

In October of 2005, a class action law suit was filed against CA schools.  This suit was also successful and required all CA schools to make significant changes in their accommodations for students with diabetes.  To see important changes in CA law that affect all schools throughout the state please see our section on California State Laws Affecting Diabetes Care in Schools.

California - San Diego County

Miramar Ranch Elementary School, Scripps Ranch, CA - An IOH parent reported that this San Diego City school not only overtly discriminating against their child with diabetes but was told to take their "diabetic problem elswhere."  To add insult to injury (not to mention a flagrant violation of federal and CA state laws, the school administrator made this comment directly in front of the child.  Miramar Ranch Elementary School then  recommended that they enroll their child in a special education school -- one of the few schools in the area with a fulltime nurse capable of giving insulin shots.  Miramar Ranch Elementary, 10770 Red Cedar Drive, San Diego, CA 92131 (858) 271-0470.
