Durable Medical Equipment Coverage

The state laws of Illinois require certain supplies (blood glucose monitors, cartridges, and lancets and lancing devices) to be covered only if the insurance policy offers durable medical equipment benefits coverage (these items are not required to be covered under regular prescription drug benefits).

Prescription Drug Coverage of Diabetes Supplies

Only if the insurance policy as a prescription drug benefit, the coverage of the following supplies is mandated:

  • Insulin
  • Syringes
  • Pen needles
  • Test strips
  • Oral medications (to manage blood sugar) and
  • Glucagon kits
