Brain Plays Key Role In Diabetes Therapy - The brain plays a major role in the ability of insulin therapy to lower blood sugar in animals with diabetes, according to a new study in the January 11, 2006, Cell Metabolism.  01/11/2006

Strict Blood Sugar Control Cuts Diabetes Heart Risk - (HealthDay News) -- A 20-year study of people with type 1 diabetes shows that tight control of blood sugar levels cuts their risk of heart disease by more than half.  12/21/2005

New Blueprint To Aid Physicians In Predicting Risk For Type 1 Diabetes - Researchers have discovered a combination of tests that can more accurately predict who will develop type 1 diabetes. In the process, they've also uncovered signs of a new protein that may forecast a more rapidly developing form of the disease. Together, these findings could help researchers screen patients for clinical trials that eventually may lead to a vaccine or cure for type 1 diabetes.  10/31/2005

UVa Researchers Show That A Natural Carbohydrate Can Help Lower Blood Sugar - A carbohydrate isolated from the liver lowers blood sugar levels after it is injected into diabetic rats, according to research carried out by a team of experts at the University of Virginia Health System.  10/27/2005

High Blood Sugar Levels A Risk Factor For Heart Disease - An elevated blood glucose level is the defining feature of diabetes, but until now it was unclear whether elevated glucose levels contributed independently to increasing heart-disease risk. Lowering blood sugar levels could reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in both diabetics and non-diabetics, according to researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and other institutions.  09/14/2005

Low Sugar Triggers Stomach Empyting in Diabetics:  When too much insulin causes acute hypoglycemia -- that is, a sudden drop in blood sugar -- it triggers gastric emptying of solids and liquids, according to the new study. As the stomach contents move into the intestines, sugars are absorbed into the bloodstream. Reuters Health , 09/09/2005

Hospital admission for selected single virus infections prior to diabetes mellitus :  Results:  There was no evidence of excess risk of diabetes after measles, mumps, rubella, infectious mononucleosis, influenza, infectious hepatitis, varicella and herpes zoster, herpes simplex, aseptic meningitis or bronchiolitis. For example, of 1433 patients admitted for measles, 6 were later admitted with diabetes (risk ratio 1.32; 95% confidence interval 0.5–2.9); of 866 patients admitted for mumps, 2 were later admitted for diabetes (risk ratio 0.74; 0.1–2.7). Numbers of people with diabetes subsequent to infection were too few, however, to rule out the possibility of small effects.  Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice; Volume 69, Issue 3, Pages 209-312 (September 2005); page item #9.  09/2005

Diabetes May Raise Risk of Pancreatic Cancer - Middle-aged, newly diagnosed patients more likely to develop disease.  Reuters, 08/11/2005

Promising Research Into Treatment of Nerve Damage Caused by Diabetes:  Scientists at the University of Manchester, UK have announced the results of pre-clinical studies on a new treatment for nerve damage caused by diabetes that could lead to a reduction in the number of leg and foot amputations performed on people with diabetes.  Excerpt posted on IDF, Press Release, 07/26/2005

Caffeine and Nighttime Hypoglycemia:  A study in the UK, published in the June issue of "Diabetes Care," has concluded that caffeine is linked to a significant reduction in episodes of nocturnal hypoglycaemia (very low blood glucose levels) in people with type 1 diabetes.  Diabetes Care; Reuters Health, as posted on IDF.org, 06/23/2005.

Study Confirms Intensive Treatment Of Diabetic Patients Significantly Reduces Heart Disease New study results confirm, for the first time, that intensive treatment of diabetic patients results in a significantly lower risk of heart disease. In fact, it can cut the risk of cardiovascular disease nearly in half. Researchers say this is yet another proven benefit of the long-term effects of tight glucose control in patients with type 1 diabetes.  06/21/2005

People With Diabetes More Sensitive To Cardiovascular Effects From Air Pollution - People with diabetes may be at higher risk for cardiovascular problems when air pollution levels are higher, according to a new study of Boston-area residents. The ability of the blood vessels to control blood flow was impaired in adults with diabetes on days with elevated levels of particles from traffic and coal-burning power plants.  06/10/2005

Elevated Glucose Levels And Diabetes Are Associated With Increased Risk For Cancer New research involving more than one million people indicates that having high fasting serum glucose levels and diabetes are risk factors for several major cancers, according to a study in the January 12 issue of JAMA. 01/19/2005

Some Anti-Psychotic Medications May Trigger Diabetes - The rate of diabetes among persons taking certain newer anti-psychotic medications is higher than that found in the general population, Yale researchers report in a study in the American Journal of Psychiatry.  10/08/2004

Higher Nocturnal Blood Pressure Predictive Of Kidney Disease In Diabetes - Monitoring nighttime blood pressure is a simple, painless and noninvasive method of identifying patients with type 1 diabetes who are at increased risk for kidney disease, according to a study published in the Sept. 12 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.  09/12/2002

Strong Statistical Correlation Between Prevalence Of Diabetes, Air Pollution - A dramatic statistical correlation between the prevalence of diabetes and air pollution levels has been demonstrated by a University at Buffalo researcher who publishes his observations in the August issue of the journal, Diabetes Care.  07/31/2002
