If you have trouble reading this newsletter, you can find it on the web at: Dear Readers, First, I apologize for not publishing a newsletter over the summer. My young daughter went into kidney failure and required surgery and quite a bit of care. I also lost three close family members in rapid (and unexpected) succession over the summer and I needed to take time off to heal a bit. But I am back on track and hope you enjoy this issue. Yours in good health, What's new at Islets of Hope? This month, IOH received HONcode certification. HON (Health on the Net) is an organization that reviews medical and health related websites and assesses their credibility based on a list of eight principles. I am very proud that IOH passed with flying colors and now proudly displays the HONcode certificate! We also received our certificate from the Better Business Bureau Online Reliability Program. We officially launched the QD Quilts for Children program through Quilting-Dee.com. The program is already a wonderful success and we have been able to send quilts to children all over the country. Quilting-Dee (owned by IOH) has now raised over $1,500 in donations, and donated materials including quilts, for the program. All donations are tax-deductible as they are received on behalf of IPump.org, Inc. to benefit diabetics in need. Islets of Hope sponsored Team Miracle Four again this year in the Ontario, CA walk to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Our team raised $3,550 including a $1,000 donation from Islets of Hope and a generous donation from Jeffrey Ehrlich of The Ehrlich Law Firm.
A special thank you to ... David Mendosa and Children with Diabetes for adding us as a diabetes resource link. Also, thank you to The Fabric Patch in Ontario, CA who volunteered to finish a number of quilts for the QD Quilts for Children program. Stories from others living with diabetes Kim and son, Eric, Glassboro, PA: A mother challenges a day care facility that discriminated against her child This month's featured personal story is about Kim Erdwein and her son, Eric. Kim wrote to me recently to share her story about how she took on a day care institution that discriminated against her 2-year-old son with type 1 diabetes. Unfortunately, it is a story, that many parents of children with diabetes can relate to. Diabetes book world
Do you suffer from weight gain related to type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, PCOS, pre-diabetes, or some other fun metabolic disorder (like I do)? You may find inspiration and answers in this book. This is the first book I have read on the subject of insulin resistance and weight gain that does not blame the patient but goes on to explain from a medical and scientific standpoint why the odds are stacked against you -- and what you can do about it. It also is the book (along with the support of a friend) that convinced my to give up my 2-liter per day Diet Coke habit. The Insulin Resistance Diet offers advice on when to eat and how to combine foods to minimize insulin spikes which not only cause hunger, hypoglycemia, but also weight gain. It uses a balanced system that I personally found far easier to understand and actually apply than the Zone, but the basic principle is similar: do not eat carbs alone, stick with healthy foods, and unlike some low-carb diet plans, you can have fruit and whole grain foods. Read about the Insulin Resistance Diet Plan Diabetes sites we like ezeeDiabetes - A wonderful list of personal stories and blogs if you are interested in how others cope, think and feel about diabetes. They even offer links to photo-only sites and You Tube diabetes stories. It is also a site (as far as I could tell) free from those offending "click here for a cure for diabetes" ads. MedLine Plus (via the NIH) Interactive Health Tutorials - offers a wonderful, interactive patient education tutorial on many medical topics including diabetes meal planning, eye and foot care, and an introduction to diabetes. The tutorial is free, but requires Flash Plug-in, version 6 or higher, but it is well worth it. A few interesting news links
