Need a break on your prescription costs?

Many with diabetes -- even those with insurance -- find it hard to budget for all the costs of associated with diabetes care.  But a savvy consumer can still find bargains, even for prescription items including drugs and test strips and monitors.

According to Gabriel Levitt of PharmacyChecker.com , a Web site that compares prices, you can purchase generic drugs at many warehouse club stores for up to 50% less than at most other pharmacies. While the savings on each pill will differ, Costco says that it sells its no-name pills for just 3% more than cost.  To purchase from Costco and Sam's Club warehouse stores you need a membership for all non-prescription items, however, if you only want to purchase prescription drugs you do not need a membership.

Stories from others living with diabetes

The Gatewood Family:  A child newly diagnosed with diabetes and her family - This month's featured personal story is about Alyssa, a child recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of only two.  Her family has done an amazing job adjusting to the challenges and only three weeks after Alyssa was diagnosed, the family did their first JDRF Walk for the Cure.  Read their story.   See pictures from their JDRF walk.

Diabetes book world

think like a pancreas  Gary Scheiner, CDE     (through our Amazon affiliate program)
Think Like a Pancreas:  Many books offer advice on managing diabetes, but few focus specifically on the day-to-day issues facing those who use insulin.  Scheiner, a certified diabetes educator and himself an insulin user himself since 1985, gives you the tools to "think like a pancreas"--that is, to successfully master the art and science of matching insulin to the body’s ever-changing needs. Free of medical mumbo jumbo, comprehensive, and packed with useful information not readily available in other books.

Diabetes sites we like

Bootie Bags, Inc. - In the spring of 2003, three-year-old son, Jackson, was diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes. Jackson's mother became proactive to help find a cure for her son and the many other children with type 1 diabetes. She began sewing designer bags from the top portions of blue jeans and called her creations "Bootie Bag." A portion of all of profits go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

A few interesting news links

Investing in Diabetes. The diabetes companies make a lot of money from us for their medications, meters, and much else. We can sometimes make money too, when we invest in some of these companies.

Wireless Monitoring. The second generation of blood glucose meters isn’t what we have long assumed it would be. It is monitoring your glucose results and automatically transmitting them to your doctor’s office or others without using a computer. The devices that have begun to become available connect to your cell phone or land line.
