Diet Reviews and Information

This is a for-profit information site where consumers can submit short articles rating programs and centers. Bear in mind that information submitted to this site is by persons who may be opinionated.

However, there is a long list of diets and programs discussed that if nothing else, will give you broard information about centers and programs that may help you to ask the right kinds of questions before signing contracts.

About the Program

The following information is based on company materials that describe the nature, focus, and purpose of the NutriSystem Nourish program:

"The NutriSystem Nourish meal plans provide approximately 55% of the calories from good, low-glycemic carbohydrates, 25% of the calories from protein, and 20% of the calories from fat."  NutriSystem compares their program with South Beach stating the concepts are similar, but offer "optimal amounts of protein and the increased effectiveness of eating prepared meals."

Their website specifically states:

"Further, the NutriSystem meal plan:

  • Contains less than the recommended limit of sodium intake
  • Features less than 5% of its calories from trans and saturated fats, which is less than half the maximum allowed in the guidelines
  • Has always stressed choosing lean, low-fat and non-fat meats like the guidelines recommend
  • Includes the ability to get half your servings of carbohydrates in the form of whole grains and the other half from enriched or whole-wheat sources, as suggested
  • Recommends at least 4 ½ cups of fruits and vegetables, which is what is advised in the report "

About the Company

Nutrisystem went bankrupt in 1993 and totally revamped its structure and the nature of their weight loss program.  Now, they offer free support to those who purchase their food and have special programs that are designed for women, men, and those with type 2 diabetes.  They are also launching a program for seniors.

Drawbacks and Considerations

Joining is expensive and there have been reports of poor customer service (wrong food items being sent ranking among the highest logged at www.consumeraffairs.com, a for-profit website that allows consumers to report companies which they have problems with so take complaints with a grain of salt and not necessarily as a reliable track record of any particular program).

You have 3 days to cancel your membership, however, there is a steep cancellation fee.

Pluses

NutriSystem seems to understand that one approach does not fit all.  They offer a low-glycemic plan for persons with type 2 diabetes and separate the needs of men from women, and even for senior citizens.  They even have an all-vegetarian plan.

Offering free support is also a plus because most persons who join centers are looking for someone to help them meet their weight-loss goals.  Centers who charge extra for support may not fully appreciate how important counseling and mentorship is to a dieter.  Their free support (which of course, they hope will encourage you to join) includes:

  • Unlimited Counseling and Support Services
  • New Nourish Catalog
  • The Daily Dose
  • Online Newsletter
  • Online Classes
  • Online Bulletin Boards and Chat Rooms
  • Online Weight Loss Diary
  • Member Profile Section
  • Diet Anaylsis for all New Members

They incorporate (and encourage) eating a variety of fruits and vegetables.

NutriSystem offers a return policy for unopened, pre-package foods, an auto-order system, and home delivery of meals.  Some restrictions apply.
