Low-carb diet information

How to quit your low-carb diet & not bloat like a whale

Low Carbohydrate Lifestyle Plans

For this reason I have broken down carbohydrate lifestyle information into two groups:

  1.  Ketogenic Plans  - (40 grams of carbohydrate or less per day)

  2.  Non-Ketogenic Plans - Includes both Carbohydrate Controlled Plans and Reduced Carbohydrate Plans neither of which induce benign dietary ketosis.

Did you know?

... that just because a diet reduces carbohydrates does not make it a low-carb diet?

... that Dr. Atkins is one of the few health professionals that used the term "benign" to describe dietary ketosis?

True low-carb diets

Medically speaking, the term “low carbohydrate diet" refers to an eating program limiting total daily carbohydrate intake to 40 grams or less.  The majority of calories come from protein and fat.

True low-carb plans are intended to induce a fat-burning state some refer to as “benign" dietary ketosis.  There is much debate as to whether dietary ketosis is "benign." However, to make things even more complicated, diets that induce ketosis are not necessarily (medically speaking) a "ketogenic" diet.

Ketogenic diets

A true ketogenic diet is one that severely restricts both  carbohydrate and protein, with the majority of calories coming from fat.  Ketogenic diets are sometimes used to help control seizures in epilepsy.  Atkins is not a ketogenic diet.

Carbohydrate Controlled

Diets that limit the type or amount of carbohydrates, but that are not intended to induce ketosis are   "carbohydrate controlled" or "modified" diets.  A low-glycemic  index diet could be classified as a carbohydrate-controlled plan.
