To be medically precise, the term “low carbohydrate” diet refers to eating programs that limiting total daily carbohydrate intake to 40 grams of carbohydrate or less.  True, low carb plans induce a fat-burning state called “benign dietary ketosis.”  This is not the same thing as diabetic ketoacidosis.  For this reason I have broken down carbohydrate lifestyle information into two groups:

  1. Ketogenic Plans - (40 grams of carbohydrate or less per day -- true low carb plans), and
  2. Carbohydrate Controlled Plans - Carbohydrate moderated plans that do not induce benign dietary ketosis.

Generally, ketogenic plans are not recommended for persons with type 1 diabetes or gestational diabetes.  However, carbohydrate modified (controlled) plans may be of benefit for all persons with any form of diabetes including type 1, type 2, prediabetes, LADA, MODY, and gestational diabetes.

Disclaimer Warning:  Since all forms of diabetes have an impact on carbohydrate metabolism, and many persons with diabetes either take insulin or diabetes medications, it is very important that you talk with your doctor or dietitian before making drastic changes in your diet of any kind.
