Before you cringe, please see my personal transformation. I am type 2, and lost more than 135 lbs on Atkins and have kept it off. 9 years.. Low carb is not for everyone, but it is also not the horrible "high fat" diet most people think it is. Atkins is not a high fat, all protein plan as many people have come to believe based on opinions from folks who have not read this book.. Atkins is not new, and ketogenic diets have been safely used to treat children with epilepsy for more tha 50 years now. Atkins for Life & Atkins for Life Cookbook state that it is bread and not butter that is the enemy in Dr. Atkins's popular and
controversial low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet. In In Atkins for Life, he
continues his decades-long crusade against low-fat eating. Atkins argues that
low-fat meals are high-carbohydrate missiles, causing the body to produce... Read more
Background: Robert C. Atkins, M.D reports to having treated 25,000 patients, with an additional 60,000 patients
registered at Atkins Center for Complimentary Medicine in New York City. By 2005 he sold over 10 million copies of his books
Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution (1992) and
Dr Atkins' Diet Revolution (1972).
Dr. Atkins died April 17, 2003 at the age of 72 after falling and
hitting his head. It is estimated that
nearly 20 million persons have adopted a low carb lifestyle. I am one of them. (Read my low carb success
story.)
There
is much controversy regarding his death and an equal amount of
misinformation. To read about
circumstances surrounding Atkins’ death visit Snopes Urban Myths. One thing is clear, although it is true Dr.
Atkins was overweight at the time of his death, he was a normal body weight
when he was admitted to the hospital in a coma. (Hellmich, Nanci and Steve Sternberg.

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution Read about this and other low -carb diets
Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution The Diabetes Diet (also by Bernstein)
From Amazon: Bernstein has had type I (juvenile or insulin-dependent) diabetes for 50 years
and has become well known for his unconventional approach to treating both types
of the disease. His emphases on almost hour-by-hour normalization of blood sugar
and a diet consisting of nearly no carbohydrates and high levels of fat and
protein have certainly educed two results: they have alienated many other
diabetes specialists and required Bernstein's patients to be meticulous in
self-managing their disease. Bernstein begins with some successful case
histories, proceeds to basic backgrounding on diabetes, and then describes his
treatment plan in considerable detail. He discusses diet, types of insulin and
their uses, and the importance of establishing a close relationship with one's
physician. He encourages his patients to make frequent visits to his office,
makes himself available by phone virtually round the clock, and here includes
five appendixes of data and exposition to help patients align their physicians'
thinking with his. NOTE: Customer reviews from type 1 diabetics were almost all positive.

The Diet Cure. For most health books, the word cure in the title is a definite sign to

Fat Flush Plan
Read about this and other low -carb diets
The keys to overweight are liver toxicity, waterlogged tissues, fear of eating
fat, excess insulin, and stress, asserts nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman. Her
Fat Flush Plan addresses these problems with a targeted diet.
The Fat Flush Plan, filled with nutritional analysis and detailed
explanations, is not a quick read. Despite Gittleman's assertion that the plan
is "as easy as 1-2-3," it is quite regimented. No white flour, white sugar,
margarine, vegetable shortening, artificial sweeteners, or caffeine. The diet
emphasizes essential oils (e.g., flaxseed and GLA), protein (eight ounces or
more, plus two eggs a day), vegetables, thermogenic spices (e.g., ginger and
cayenne), water, and diuretic beverages (eight glasses/day of diluted,
unsweetened cranberry juice). In its first two-week phase, the plan is a rigid,
low calorie (1,100-1,200 calories/day), low-carb (no grains or starchy
vegetables) diet. Phase two lets you increase your calories to 1,500 and add two
"friendly carbs." Phase three, the "lifestyle program," moderately adds more
dairy, carbs, and calories. Gittleman promotes walking and recommends strength
training in phase three.
The book includes 41 recipes such as Grilled Lamb Chops with Cinnamon and
Coriander, Breakfast Egg Fu Yung, and Cumin Sautéed Scallops. The Fat Flush
Plan is recommended for dieters willing to commit to a strict plan for
weight loss. --Joan Price

The Schwarzbein SBP: The Program SBP Cookbook SBP Vegetarian Cookbook SBP Principle II: The Transition
From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr.
Schwarzbein concludes that low-fat diets cause heart attacks, eating fat makes
you lose body fat, and it's important to eat high-cholesterol foods every day.
The Schwarzbein Principle is a holistic guide to achieving lasting
weight loss, normalizing metabolism and maintaining ideal body composition
through lifestyle and nutrition. By bringing the internal systems into balance,
the Schwarzbein program has been proven to: reverse type II diabetes; free
people from food cravings for chocolate, caffeine and sugar; cure depression and
mood swings; and reduce body fat while building lean tissue. The nutritional
program consists of two phases -Healing and Maintenance - which are easy to
adopt into any lifestyle. Instead of shunning fat, the program advocates eating
all of the good fats and proteins your body needs as well as an unlimited
portion of non-starchy carbohydrates. By incorporating the lifestyle components
of stress management, exercise and eliminating harmful stimulants, program
participants experience renewed energy and vitality.

I have done the Zone several times when I tired of truly low carb diets (Atkins and Protein Power are my staples, but I sometimes take a "break" on South Beach, Sugar Busters, and low glycemic plans, including the Zone). Eventually, I do gain weight on the Zone (but I am one of those lucky persons severely metabolic challenged with PCOS, a thyroid disorder, and diabetes). The plan is very permissive but you have to plan your meals carefully. Servings are generous and you will likely not be hungry on this plan, but it is hard to eat out on the Zone unless you really are good at calcuatling fat/protein/carb ratio. I suggest the Zone Block book or A Week in the Zone as a supplement to beginners simply because a lot of the calculating will be done for you. The Zone is a nice transition diet when you want to get off of ketogenic low -carb diets.
A note on Zone bars: The tiny bars are meal replacements, not snacks. If you have a Zone bar for snack, you only get half!
