Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

  Joan Gomez, M.D.
Thyroid Problems in Women and Children:  The thyroid is one of the most important parts of the body, regulating metabolism and organ function. Thyroid disorder can manifest as hypothyroidism (too little activity) or hyperthyroidism (too much activity). Symptoms can range from mild to serious, but thyroid problems are 90 percent curable if detected. This complete, up-to-date book covers every aspect of both conditions, incorporating case studies and including special chapters for pregnant women, babies, children, adolescents, and women over 50. Another chapter discusses vitamins, the role of iodine, how diet affects the thyroid, and the role of stress

This is a good purchase. It will help to identify strategies aimed at keeping the thyroid healthy and intact. The use of clean water, dairy, lean meat, fish (iodine content) are important in maintaining overall thyroid health into the future. Chronic overeating, eating too little and feeling cold all the time are classic events which aggravate the thyroid and lead to intractable problems. In addition, the book advises to use salt sparingly and to stop using red food dyes. Underactive thyroid inducers are cabbage, peanuts, mustard seed, sweet corn, soy and milk from cows. Certain medicinal preparations induce thyroid strain; namely, heparin, diazepam, beta blockers, aspirin , steroids and sulfonamides. Breathing problems may be aggravated by an over-active thyroid. Stress, trauma, surgery, burns, radiation, bereavement and personal illness-all place added burdens on the thyroid. This book is a worthy purchase for consumers interested in maintaining thyroid health.     IOH Rating 5/5

Mary J. Shoman
The Thyroid Diet
:  For more than 25 million Americans it may be, due to the metabolic slowdown of a malfunctioning thyroid gland. The Thyroid Diet will help many previously unsuccessful dieters get diagnosed and treated -- and proper thyroid treatment might be all that’s needed to successfully lose weight. Even after optimal treatment, however, weight problems plague many thyroid patients. For those patients, The Thyroid Diet will identify the many frustrating impediments to weight loss, and offer solutions-both conventional and alternative -- to help. Discussing optimal dietary changes, thyroid-damaging foods to avoid, and metabolism-supporting herbs and supplements, it contains several different eating plans, food lists, and a set of delicious and healthy gourmet recipes. With handy worksheets to use in weight-loss tracking and a special resource section featuring Web sites, books, and support groups, here is vital help for millions..

Mary J. Shoman
Living Well With Hypothyroidism:  As many as one in eight women have a thyroid condition. Shomon covers conventional, alternative, and late-breaking approaches to treatment--such as challenging the gold standard of Synthroid as the thyroid replacement therapy of choice. (Synthroid replaces T4, the less active of the two thyroid hormones, and Shomon features new research on adding T3--the more potent thyroid hormone--to treatment.)

With her down-to-earth, patient-centered approach, Shomon explains everything from how to choose a thyroid specialist to how calcium, antidepressants, and a high-fiber diet affect thyroid hormone absorption. The book includes a chapter on depression, which is a typical misdiagnosis of hypothyroidism--as well as a symptom that often persists even after treatment. She also covers infertility (women who are hypothyroid don't ovulate as regularly and miscarry more frequently) and thyroid cancer, one of the less common causes of hypothyroidism. She explains how  to spot hypothyroidism in kids, and ends with a glossary, international resources, and journal references.

Elizabeth Lee Vliet, M.D., Founder and Medical Director of HER Place Centers:  "If I could recommend only one book on thyroid problems for my patients, this would be it."

 Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D.
The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women:  A woman's definitive guide to understand- ing and coping with thyroid disorders.  Millions of women suffer from a thyroid condition; unfortunately, many of them may not know that the cause of their health problems is thyroid disease and so their symptoms often go undiagnosed. The most common thyroid disorders are autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto's disease and Graves' disease. And thyroid cancer is the fastest rising cancer among women. Now M. Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D., the most trusted voice on thyroid disorders, is helping women take charge of their health with a new, up-to-date edition of The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women.

This revised and updated second edition includes the latest research and corrects misinformation in other thyroid books. It addresses women's specific concerns about thyroid disease symptoms and treatment, including thyroid hormone therapy and how thyroid disease interacts with other women's health issues, such as pregnancy, menopause, emotional health, diet and weight gain, and other autoimmune disorders.

The ultimate resource for any woman with a thyroid condition, The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women will help you make informed decision about your health in language you can understand.

 Dr. Siegal
Is Your Thyroid Making You Fat?:
While Dr. Siegal is an obvious proponent of the idea that many  have undiagnosed thyroid problems, you shouldn't rule out the possibility that he is correct in his thinking. If after you read this book, take all the tests, fill out the checklists, keep track of your temperature, and try his 28-day eating test, you don't think you got your money's worth, I'd be surprised. The 28-day part of the title is a way to evaluate your metabolic function. There is a bit of math involved, but it's not especially difficult.

You use your present weight, your weight on day 29, various charts that help you calculate exactly how many calories you eat, how many you need to maintain your weight, and a number of other factors that will, in the end, tell you just how easy or difficult it is for you, personally, to lose weight.   This book does not support any one way of eating: it's not low calorie, it's not low fat, it's not low carbohydrate. It's not a diet book at all. It simply calculates your metabolic functioning based on whatever way you eat.

Dr. Siegal also gives strong arguments for the use of natural thyroid supplementation as opposed to the use of synthetics.  While some may find it too detailed, I think it's most complete in its coverage of this topic. In a way, it takes a lot of what other books have and presents all in one place. The medical jargon may be a bit difficult, but it's great information to take to your doctor.

Low GI Guide to Managing PCOS

 Dr. Samuel Thatcher
PCOS:  The Hidden Epidemic:
PCOS is a common and complex endocrine disorder. While much has been learned in recent years regarding its causes and treatments, much remains unanswered. For women diagnosed with PCOS, there has not been a single authoritative source of information written with the patient in mind. Now, Dr. Thatcher has filled that gap. This text is an informative, readable, and useful source of information for patients and their families. Dr. Thatcher conveys his expertise in this area to those who need it most. I will recommend this book to anyone who has or is interested in learning more about PCOS. David Ehrmann, M.D. U. of  Chicago, Center for PCOS     IOH Rating 5/5

   Boss, Sterling, Legro
Living With PCOS:
Named after the cysts that may form in the ovaries, PCOS is a hormone disorder that causes irregular menstrual cycles, obesity, and infertility, among other symptoms. If untreated, it can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and uterine cancer. This is a book about and by PCOS women (coauthors Boss and Sterling both have it; physician Legro is an expert on the syndrome), which is evident in their clear  descriptions of the disorder, its symptoms, medical diagnosis, and treatments .

 Dr. John Eden
Polycystic Ovary Synrome:
Addressing PCOS, this medical guide gives women the confidence to ask their doctors the right questions and make informed choices. In simple  language, the latest advice about managing PCOS is offered to the one in four women with polycystic ovaries and the seven out of 100 of this group who suffer the effects of PCOS. The symptoms, including acne, excess hair, weight problems, and irregular menstruation are outlined. Such questions as What causes PCOS? How do hormones work? How  is PCOS different from simply having polycystic ovaries? Does PCOS necessarily lead to infertility? How is it treated? and What is the connection between PCOS and diabetes? are answered. Case studies and the latest research for patients, pharmacists, doctors, and other health professionals are included.

 Collette Harris
The PCOS Protection Plan:  Do you struggle with your weight? Have irregular periods (or none at all)? Get acne? Notice thinning hair? Or do you have to deal with unwanted facial and body hair? If you have any of these problems, the chances are fairly good that you have PCOS, along with one in ten women.  Women with PCOS are more likely to get diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity and its related health problems; and research is currently linking PCOS to a host of other health complications as well.  The PCOS Protection Plan, an action plan written by women with PCOS for women with PCOS— helps you take control of your health so that you can significantly reduce the risk of serious health conditions.

Milton Hammerly, Cheryl Kimball
What to do When Your Doctor Says it's PCOS:  PCOS is the number one cause of irregular periods and infertility in women. It affects 10% of women worldwide. If left undetected, PCOS can lead to cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. While researchers haven’t determined the cause of PCOS, they know it is linked to insulin resistance, which causes obesity.  That’s where this book comes in. Insulin resistance can be controlled with a low-carb diet fairly easily.

Do's and Don'ts of Hypoglycemia:  Ruggiero, founder of the Hypoglycemia Research Foundation, has written this book for people who are in the early stages of hypoglycemia and need introductory-level information. Ruggiero, who has hypoglycemia herself, shares her own travails of being misdiagnosed several times. She stresses the importance of obtaining an accurate diagnosis and receiving proper medical treatment, explains the necessary diagnostic tests, and describes how to find a doctor. Appendixes include a bibliography, a list of referral organizations, and recommended foods and menus. This is a very reasonable, well-researched presentation of a topic which has often been treated faddishly in other publications.   Recommended for public libraries.

Prediabetes:  An estimated 41 million Americans have the condition identified since 2002 as prediabetes, which, if left unchecked, inevitably will lead to full-blown diabetes. From one of the world's leading diabetes "patient-experts," this first-ever practical guide offers fifty essential, informative ideas and simple steps to help this vast and rapidly growing constituency manage their condition and thereby reduce their chances of developing full-blown diabetes. Prediabetes clearly explains what readers can do today, no matter what their age, and whether or not they have a family history of diabetes, a severe weight problem, or are members of an ethnic group at high risk-including Hispanics, Native Americans, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders. Helpful drawings and graphs are featured throughout in this new, revised edition.

 Williamson
Blood Sugar Blues:  Williamson (The Fibromyalgia Relief Book), a medical writer, offers an overview of various medical conditions diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol related to insulin resistance, a phenomenon caused by diet whereby people become immune to their own insulin, causing their blood sugar levels to fluctuate. While diabetics are usually aware of their dietary restrictions, Williamson believes that millions of other people are suffering, sometimes needlessly, because they eat the wrong foods, especially carbohydrates. With anecdotal and scientific evidence, she advocates a low carbohydrate/high protein diet for everyone. Much of the book focuses on several medical conditions (rather than on one sensationalized condition like "Syndrome X") and various treatments. Williamson reviews several popular diets, offering pros and cons, but lets readers decide which is for them. In clean, engaging prose, Williamson ably explains complicated jargon.

  Gerald Reaven, M.D.
Syndrome X: The Silent Killer:
If you have Syndrome X -- and 60 to 75 million Americans do -- the widely recommended low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet may be the surest route to a heart attack.

Someone with Syndrome X has very high insulin levels, along with high blood fats and unusually small and dense particles of LDL (low-density lipoprotein)--the dangerous stuff. Diets high in carbohydrates or protein--like the American Heart Association and Zone diets--actually lead to more insulin production. Reaven says this starts a chain reaction in people with Syndrome X that leads to damaged arteries and eventually to heart attacks.

The solutions to the problem start with a low-carbohydrate diet that's high in unsaturated fats--fish, nuts, oils, and margarine and mayonnaise made from safflower oil. Reaven also recommends the usual suspects: more exercise, no smoking, less drinking.

Gerald Reaven, M.D., Professor of Medicine at Stanford University, discovered Syndrome X. A world-renowned endocrinologist, he has received a wide array of scientific awards and has served as director of the division of endocrinology and metabolism, among other posts, at Stanford's School of Medicine. He lives in Stanford, California.    IOH Rating 5/5

  Thomas J. Biuos, M.D.
The American Epidemic:  This self-help book on good health is superb. The book is an easy-to-read primer on the metabolic syndrome (also called pre-diabetes) - a condition that, according to the author who has practiced Internal Medicine for many years and teaches at a major medical center, has become a worldwide epidemic. The chapters are neatly outlined on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. There's even a chapter that explains how the immune system and stress contribute to one's susceptibility to these conditions. What's makes it extra special, though, is the concise way the author explains how these conditions are "inflammatory diseases" of the body, the self assessment test quantifying your risk for disease, and the treatment (including traditional and alternative therapies) to forestall or prevent progression to diabetes and heart disease.

 Dr. Francine Kaufman
Diabesity:  If anyone knows the tremendous toll diabetes and obesity have taken on the lives of millions of adults--and increasingly children--who have become affected by diabetes, that would be Dr Francine Kaufman. She has tirelessly dedicated her life to advocating on behalf of patients with diabetes, making sure they have the best medical treatment available, researching possible cures, and trying to prevent the diabesity epidemic.

This is a book that everyone should read because diabetes is a disease that affects everyone. There are currently over 18 million diabetics in this country: chances are, either you or someone you love has diabetes. A 2000 study estimated that roughly 1 in 3 children will develop diabetes in their lifetimes: that could be your child if you don't read this book and learn how to stop the epidemic.

When I was a child, I had the privilege of going to see Dr Kaufman for my diabetes care for 15 years. Now she has distilled all the insights gleaned from her many years of clinical practice and research into one highly readable, gripping, informative book. This book shows us that we can halt the epidemic if--but only if--we really make it a priority.   KYM, California.

Tai Chi For Diabetes:  Physician and tai chi expert Paul Lam has created a 77-minute tai chi workout with movements specifically chosen for those with both Type I and Type II diabetes. In the seven-minute introduction, Australian medical experts explain the disease and endorse tai chi, with its gentle combination of muscle-strengthening and relaxation exercises, as ideal for diabetic patients. Then Lam and his assistants begin a program of warm-ups, stretches, and qigong movements designed to improve energy along the meridians affected by diabetes. (Lam explains meridians as part of the Chinese concept of Qi--"life energy"--and how they affect the body.) They follow with both basic and advanced dance-like movements, which have such delightful monikers as "fair lady working at the shuttle" and "waving hands in the cloud." Lam includes a separate demonstration without instruction for those who master the movements and want a fluid routine to follow. --Kimberly Heinrichs
